Our friends at Lost N Missing have asked for assistance in highlighting the case of missing South Carolina mother Kari Colegrove-Waites.

Kari was last seen January 5th, 2010, when she dropped off her children at her mother’s home for a sleepover. Authorities have verified she later met up with a male friend at the Royal Inn Motel in York, South Carolina, and has not been seen or heard from since. She took no personal belongings other than the clothes she was wearing, and did not have a cell phone.

Kari is now 27 years old, and is 5’2″, weighing 110 lbs. at the time of her disappearance. She has brown/black hair and hazel eyes, with no known tattoos. The male in question with whom Kari was last seen is now in hiding, and authorities are unable to reach him for questioning.

Shanta Marie Johnson

Circumstances of Disappearance
Shanta and her adoptive mother visited Briarcliffe Mall in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on July 19, 1992. The mother told authorities that Shanta disappeared near the toy department of the K-Mart store inside the shopping center during the afternoon hours. They were visiting from Cumberland County, N.C.

The couple had begun adoption proceedings for the child and her younger brother three months earlier. Shanta, formerly Shante Reid was born in Wilmington to a mother addicted to drugs. The baby tested positive for cocaine at birth.

A review of store surveillance tapes showed that the adoptive mother entered the store alone.
On May 5, 1992, a doctor examined Shanta and pronounced her in excellent health. A month later, Shanta was seen by doctors at Duke University Medical Center for health problems associated with her birth.

According to the records the doctors at Duke noticed physical and mental problems, including bruises, scratches and extreme fear in a child who previously had appeared to be extroverted. She had bitten her fingernails so severely that her fingertips bled.

No charges has been filed in Shanta's disappearance. FBI and Horry County investigators suspect that Shanta never entered South Carolina.

Shane Govan

On Nov. 10, 2008, witnesses said they observed Shane Govan at a Citron Road address in Cordova, SC when they heard individuals arguing and gunshots.

“We have conducted an exhaustive investigation into the disappearance of Shane Govan. We have chased down all leads, interviewed a host of witnesses and yet we have not been able to locate this individual,” Sheriff Larry Williams said.

The person reported hearing someone call out, "I should kill you." Several more shots were fired. A small, gray Toyota truck was seen leaving the area at a high rate of speed.

Shane Govan's cell phone and cigarette lighter were found at the scene, along with several shell casings.

Shanik Govan says her mother died several months later, still worrying about her son.

Susan Kay DeLuca

Susan Kay DeLuca was last seen on April 15 as she was possibly traveling to the state of Maryland to visit her family. She was reported missing on April 29. She was last seen in the area of Sparky's Fireworks store on Hwy. 501 in Marion County. Detectives initiated an investigation once law enforcement learned that DeLuca never made it to Maryland. DeLuca's car was found at the bottom of the Little Pee Dee River in June 2010 but she has yet to be found.

Ted Godbolt, DeLuca’s landlord whom she rented a mobile home from on William Nobles Road said she lived with a man and both kept quiet to themselves.

Through police reports, WMBF News learned that Ms. DeLuca quit her job at the Waffle House in Aynor just before she disappeared.

DeLuca's father told NewsChannel 15 his daughter moved to Horry County about five years ago and described her as somewhat transient. He said, though, that she's never gone this long without checking in.
A woman who lives at the house where DeLuca was living before she vanished said she knew DeLuca casually and that it wasn't like her to just leave.

"She left her stuff like she was coming back. She didn't leave like a person moving with no intention of coming back or disappearing," said Jean King.

Jolene's last contact was a phone conversation with her father on February 26, 2011. She called form Charleston airport asking for money to go back to Southern California. Jolenes cell phone was been active. Jolene did not call her son on his birthday, which is out of character for her. She was reported missing with North Charleston police on March 10, 2011. Jolene and her boyfriend David Swanson arrived in Orange County, California on March 6, 2011 accoring to David's step-father Jim Gill. He claims that he picked them up at a bus station in Orange County and drove them to friends house. The last information from Mr. Gill was that he has not had any contact with Jolene or David for two months prior to date June 6, 2011.

With a history of running away, authorities first listed Tierra Inman, 15, under that category, a runaway. It's been my experience that a person who is categorized as "just a runaway" is not too high on the priority list, especially teens with a history.

As most experts will tell you, teens are either running away from something, or running to something, but either way, they are usually in an endangered situation and, as teens, do not have the ability to make good conscious decisions for themselves.

Tierra was last seen on October 16, 2011 along Stewart St. in Marion, SC and her last contact with a friend was on October 20. Her family says although she has run away from home before, she usually returns within a few days. There has been no contact from her since October 20. They believe she could be in the Florence, Columbia or Myrtle Beach areas.

Authorities are now asking for the public's assistance, and Tierra is now categorized as missing.

Inman has been described as standing 5’5″ and weighing about 175 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing light blue shorts and a white t-shirt.

On Saturday, October 29 at 10am family members of the missing, along with members of the community, law enforcement, media and speakers will gather at Chapin Park at 1400 North Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach. South Carolina has approximately 125 known open missing persons cases, some recent and many that have gone cold. ImaginePublicity hopes to add to the awareness of each of them by hosting a stop along the CUE Center for Missing Persons’ Road to Remember Tour in Myrtle Beach.

Each year CUE Center for Missing Persons hits the road across several states in order to bring awareness to communities of the magnitude of a silent epidemic, missing persons. This year’s tour will cover the following states: NC, TN, SC, TX, MS, AL, FL, LA . Every year, Monica Caison and representatives from CUE travel a different route in order to bring needed attention in the media and each community.

The annual tour was created to generate new interest in cold cases of missing people across our nation. The inspiration came in 2004 from the case of North Carolina college student Leah Roberts, who had gone on a cross-country trip of self-exploration. Her wrecked and abandoned vehicle was found, but Leah is still missing. Leah’s case went cold and interest faded until CUE Center volunteers set out on a grueling 14-day trip to retrace her route and inform the media of all those who were missing in the path of the tour. In the years to follow, it only seemed right to keep hope alive after families across the country voiced the need for more help and supported the tour idea.

All families with missing loved ones in South Carolina are invited to participate. Please bring pictures, signs, banners, or whatever you like, to honor your missing loved one and bring more attention to your loved one’s case.

Woodrow Taylor

On Dec. 13, 1997 Woodrow Taylor walked away from his Conway home off of Hucks Road and was never seen again. According to reports he left his house with a friend. Taylor is reported to have been carrying $1,100 at the time of his disappearance. His friend stated that he left Taylor at the intersection of U.S. 701 and S.C. 410 in Conway and that he never saw him again. His friends began to get worried after he missed church, which is something he would never do. Taylor’s friend from church paged him repeatedly. After the friend’s repeated pages the call was returned by the person who Taylor was last seen with. Police suspected foul play but no charges were ever filed. Taylor is still considered a missing person and the case is open and unsolved.

Mae Cynthia Bullock

On May 15, 2009 Mae Bullock, a homeless woman in Myrtle Beach, contacted her son in Hickory, N.C. telling her son that she was coming to visit him. She was never heard from again. According to reports, her son grew concerned that he had not heard from his mother in four months. The cellular phone that she had was also not reachable. Bullock’s son did not know where to find her but he did know that she frequented the community kitchen for meals and the First Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach. On the same day she last contacted her son, May 15, 2009, Bullock filed a police report in regards to being a victim of credit card fraud but she did not leave any contact information to follow up on. None of the people that knew her in the area had seen her or knew her whereabouts. The case remains open and unsolved.

The coldest case of all is that of Rebecca Slavinsky. She was last seen on July 28, 1979 in the area of 64th Avenue N. In Myrtle Beach. According to reports, Slavinsky met up with a friend at the Driftwood Motel. She wanted the friend to take her swimming so they proceeded from there to 64th Avenue N. Slavinsky took her friend’s surfboard and went to the water. She did not know how to swim but it was a calm day and she used the surfboard to float herself in shallow water. Her friend told police that he went to his sister’s house on 65th Avenue N. but he was tired and he fell asleep. That was the last time anyone heard from Slavinsky. Her friend awoke the next morning and was unable to find her. All of her clothes, her beach towel, and the surfboard were found but she was not. Witnesses reported seeing Slavinsky in the area but no foul play was reported. No further leads were ever found and the case remains open.

On June 23, 2009 Glenn Howlett, from Greensboro, N.C., made his last phone call to his family and he was never heard from again. According to reports, his last phone call was made from a McDonald’s in Myrtle Beach. They became worried because Howlett phoned home on a consistent basis and they had not heard from him in five weeks. Howlett reportedly had trouble with alcohol and the law. And according to reports, he was also in a troubled marriage and his wife had made threats against him in the past. Searches for Howlett revealed nothing and his body was never found and he was never heard from again. The case remains open and unsolved.

Lisa Ann Meyers Neugent

On Sept. 8, 1999 Lisa Neugent, from Rockingham County, N.C., called her parents on the way to Cherry Grove Beach to help her boyfriend with a construction project he was working on. She was never heard from again. According to reports, Neugent was looking to escape an abusive marriage she was in with another man. She married her first husband in 1997. Two years later she met a new boyfriend and moved with him almost immediately to his home in Conway. She found work as a courier in her new town.

According to her friends, her new boyfriend was very possessive of her, but in spite of this they were very happy together for the next two years. In September of 1999 Neugent’s parents came to visit. On the last night of her parents’ visit Neugent’s boyfriend did not return home. Neugent confided in her parents that he was using drugs and they persuaded her to come to Rockingham County with them and she agreed. Her boyfriend began calling her the next day. Then he came there looking for her. He told her parents that he had rented a nearby hotel room so that Lisa and he could discuss their relationship and that he would return her the next day. Instead he took her to Cherry Grove to work on a home improvement project.

On Sept. 12, he phoned one of Neugent’s friends and claimed that Lisa left the Sea Mist Resort in Cherry Grove where they were staying and took their dog and $1,200 out of his pockets while he was asleep. There was no sign of Neugent at their home in Conway. Management for the home stated that Neugent’s boyfriend had moved out weeks before and there was no sign of Neugent at the home. Neugent’s boyfriend was arrested one month later on narcotics and burglary charges in Georgia but he never appeared on his charges. He also is wanted in South Carolina for child support. Neugent is still considered a missing person as no evidence of foul play was ever uncovered. Her case remains unsolved and open.

Brian "Neil" Hooks

It’s been 23 years since Amy Turner last saw her brother Brian “Neil” Hooks, but she remembers it as if it were yesterday.

“He came by Mama and Daddy’s and said they (Hooks and his live-in lover) were going to the beach for the weekend. He said he’d called us when he got back. That’s the last time we ever spoke to him or sawhim,” Turner said, fighting back tears.

That was in September 1988. Hooks was 21. He has never been seen or heard from again.

Turner said her family became concerned when Hooks didn’t call the next week. Turner called her brother’s house and asked to speak to him, but a roommate said there was nobody by the name of Neil at the residence and hung up on her. She called back, and asked to speak to Hooks’ boyfriend. She said he told her Hooks had “run off” without telling anybody where he was going.

“We knew right then something was wrong,” Turner said. “Neil didn’t stay away from our mama. I don’t care where he was going, he’d have found a way to call her. Even if he didn’t get in touch with anybody else, he’d have got in touch with Mama.”

Turner and her family members immediately went to the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and filed a missing persons report. Then sheriff’s investigator Jerry Coker worked the case until the leads went cold but was never able to locate Hooks. But he suspected foul play from the beginning and even identified a person of interest in the case.

Still, with no evidence, the case eventually fell to the wayside.

That was until earlier this year when Turner’s father died.

“Before our father passed away, I made a promise to him that I would do everything I could (to find Hooks and bring her family closure),” Turner said, “and I’m not breaking that promise.”

Turner contacted the sheriff’s office to see if they would consider taking another look at the case. FlorenceCounty Sheriff Kenney Boone assigned the case to Lt. Glen Kirby, who has been working it diligently ever since.

“We’ve interviewed some people and developed some new leads,” Kirby said.

“We’ve actually been talking to a lot of people from Virginia on down -- a few who were in jail at one point with the person of interest in this case,” he said. “We’re also checking some locations that we believe could hold evidence connected to this case. It’s been over 20 years, but we’re not giving up on this. We want to bring closure to this family. They deserve closure.”

About eight years ago, sheriff’s investigators received information indicating Hooks’ remains may be buried in an area near Willow Creek Road, which is where Hooks last lived. Investigators searched and excavated the area but to no avail, Kirby said.

Turner said she and her family have come to terms with the fact that Hooks is probably dead. But even so, she said they want closure.

“This has been really, really hard, not knowing anything all these years,” Turner said. “We want his remains. We want to give him a proper burial and have a place where we can go and talk to him and feel close to him. We want him home.”

Circumstances of Disappearance:
Hughes was last seen at the Manor House, an assisted living facility in the vicinity of Academy Avenue and Fraser Street in Georgetown, South Carolina, on November 27, 2003. He has never been heard from again and an extensive search of the local area turned up no sign of him. Hughes is originally from Fayetteville, North Carolina and his family thought he may have attempted to return there, but searches of Fayetteville turned up nothing.

Hughes had been living at the Manor Housefor three years prior to his disappearance, and during his time there he would often walk to a nearby church, but would return to the facility of his own accord. His brother said another resident of the facility had a car and he thinks this person may have driven Garrett somewhere on the day of his disappearance. He couldn’t walk far due to his paralysis. Hughes case remains unsolved.

Rebecca Lynn Simmons(FOUND)

Each morning as I check my email, there is a Google alert for missing persons from South Carolina, my home state. Usually I know about most of the missing because of networking on Facebook and various missing persons sites, however, I had not heard of Rebecca Lynn Simmons who has been missing since May 8, 2011 from a WalMart parking lot in Anderson County.

Two things bothered me about this particular missing mother. The first thing I do is check the news stories, other missing persons sites, Google and Facebook to see if there is further information about the case. As I found the page on Facebook that her family members put up (with only 55 "likes") I was struck by something sounding familiar. One of the members posted a response from one of their local news outlets:

"...investigators say they don't believe foul play is involved or that she is in any danger. Please know I realize you and your family are still concerned about her well being. Because she is an adult and investigators don't believe she is in harms way (at this time) there's nothing I can do story wise." (June 30)

Unfortunately, this is a typical response when an adult goes missing. The first news reports didn't go out until July 13. This is outrageous! Two months have passed and no one has taken the pleas of this family seriously. Precious evidence is already gone which could have clues as to what happened to Rebecca Lynn Simmons.

The second thing that bothered me greatly was the last place she was seen was a WalMart parking lot. Memories of Alice Donovan came flooding back to me. Alice was one of the first missing mothers I wrote about, the case from which this blog was born. Luckily, her family knew to check certain records immediately and were able to get investigators to react quickly. Although Alice was abducted, tortured and murdered, her killers were caught and are now on death row. Her remains would not be found for 6 years, leaving the worst nightmare for her daughters and other family members to live through.

News accounts say that Rebecca Lynn Simmons had an active warrant for a probation violation. Perhaps she wasn't on the right side of the law, and that's a reason that authorities believed she may have walked away from her life, but it's not a good enough reason not to actively look for her. Her family, as thousands of others, didn't know what to do first, she wasn't reported missing until May 31, again, losing precious time.

Simmons’ mother, Jewell Craig, said she has kept a picture of her daughter in her pocket since she disappeared. "It just makes me feel a little better. Even though I don't know where she is, I got this and I can say, 'I love you,' to her picture," said Craig. "When I change my shirt, I take it out and put it in my clean shirt."

The family of Rebecca Lynn Simmons has entered the world of the missing. It's a world where no one has chosen to be, but are thrust into it by circumstances. My hope is that they will be able to connect to the good people who will do what they can to help. They need many, many different kinds of help, from support to passing out flyers, from prayer to someone to assist them with law enforcement and media attention.

Perhaps they will contact CUE Center for Missing Persons to get that help. Monica Caison and her group of volunteers are the best in the nation and can possibly make a change in direction for this missing mother case.

Rebecca Lynn Simmons had no money, and her cell phone has been cut off since she went missing. Authorities, two months later, admit there may be foul play connected with her vanishing.

July 15, 2011........Rebecca Lynn Simmons has been found.

ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Anderson County Coroner's Office said Friday that a body found in an abandoned well on Thursday was that of a woman missing since May.

The well was located on property in a remote area off Hurricane Creek Road.

Chad McBride, of the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, said an investigator was at the property when he looked down into the well and saw what appeared to be human remains at the bottom.

Crews were sent into the well and determined that the investigator did indeed see a human body.

The Anderson County Coroner's Office said Friday afternoon that the remains are that of 45-year-old Rebecca Simmons.

Simmons's family said she had been missing since May 8.

Spartanburg Public Safety is looking for Evelyn Shelton--missing since Friday.

Officers believe its possible Shelton is a victim of foul play.

Captain Randy Hardy says Shelton’s car was found along Hayne Street in Spartanburg the day after she vanished. No one at the business the car was found at reported seeing her there.

Investigators say she was last seen on North Dean Street in the city, Friday night, by a man she met for a study date.

He has been interviewed by officers and isnt considered a suspect.

In the meantime, the Shelton family is trying to remain hopeful, Timothy Shelton, 39, said. His father is keeping busy to keep from thinking about what may have happened to his daughter. Another sister is taking it hard, because Evelyn Shelton was at her side to console her when her fiance recently died.

The five siblings are close. They grew up in the Boiling Springs area. Evelyn Shelton graduated from Boiling Springs High in 1986.

Timothy Shelton said his sister's roommate became concerned Sunday night when Evelyn Shelton had not returned home over the weekend.

Shelton is described as a black woman, 5’2”, 110 lbs, black hair and brown eyes.

A reward of up to $2,000 is offered for information on her whereabouts, leading to her recovery.

Brooke Leigh Henson was known as "Brookey" to her friends. She was a fun-loving girl, who enjoyed shopping with her mother and hiking in the South Carolina mountains. In fact, she loved the outdoors -- that's the place she felt most at home. Mysteriously, on July 4, 1999, she vanished and police suspect foul play.

Police say on July 3, 1999, Brooke hosted a party with several of her friends. Unfortunately, Brooke and her boyfriend had a disagreement that night and Brooke wanted to take a walk to get some fresh air.

She left at 2:30 a.m. and planned to walk to a convenience store two blocks away. Brooke was last seen walking along Henderson Drive in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. Police have followed numerous leads since her disappearance but have been unable to find Brooke. Americas Most Wanted

Details of Disappearance
Henson resided with her family in Travelers Rest, South Carolina in 1999. She hosted a party with several friends during the evening of July 3, 1999. Henson’s parents returned from a concert in Charlotte, North Carolina at approximately 2:00 AM on July 4. She was sitting on their front porch at the time of their arrival. Henson said that she and her boyfriend had a disagreement earlier that night. She told her family members that she planned to walk to Willis’ store on the corner of Hawkins Road and Poinsett Highway to purchase cigarettes. Henson departed from the house at approximately 2:30 AM and was last seen walking along Henderson Drive. The store is approximately two blocks from her residence. She never returned home.

Henson’s loved ones stated that it is extremely uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning. Her family said that authorities did not begin a search of the area until three weeks after her disappearance. Investigators reportedly believed that Henson left of her own accord and expected her to return shortly afterwards.

In June 2006, the Travelers Rest police department got report that a Columbia University student registered using Henson’s name, birth date and social security number. Police believe the woman was actually Esther Elizabeth Reed. Police believe Reed stole Henson’s identity in order to be accepted to and attend Columbia University.

The family of a missing Myrtle Beach man says with every passing day it gets harder not knowing if he is dead or alive.

The former trainer for the Coastal Carolina University football team was last seen at a Sumter nightclub and police suspect a crime may be involved in 24-year-old Brandon Graves' disappearance.

"Whoever, wherever, please send Brandon home to us please send him home," said Lois German in a tearful plea for information about her son.

Brandon Graves was last seen January 30, 2010. He had attended Morris College's homecoming festivities in Sumter. Police say he later went to Sabastian's Nightclub where he was removed by bouncers. He hasn't been seen since.

"It is very out of his character for him to come up missing and just dissolve everywhere," said Lorenzo Graves, Brandon's brother.

Police in Sumter County suspect a crime maybe involved in Brandon's disappearance, and that's what's so disturbing to his relatives. The family says every time the phone rings, they get anxious. "I think I'm going to listen to Brandon saying come pick me up. He's in my voicemail. Everyday from not hearing from him, I have to turn my phone on and listen to his voice," said Brandon's brother Larry German.

Lois longs to hear her son's voice just one more time. "God, wherever he may be, please God put a shield around him and bring him home to us."

Brandon lives in Myrtle Beach and graduated from CCU. His family says he came home to Dillon every weekend to be with them and go to church.

New York (CNN) — Eva Debruhl, 15, was last seen nearly 33 years ago, cutting the front lawn of her family’s home in Rock Hill, South Carolina, with a push mower.

“Eva loved to cut grass, as we both did,” said her older sister, Tami Settlemyer, 49. “There was just something about cutting grass that we both enjoyed.”

But Debruhl wasn’t at the door to greet her sister when she came home from her summer job at the local textile mill late in the afternoon of June 29, 1977. She had missed lunch with her grandmother, who lived in another house on the family’s 9-acre spread. And Debruhl’s best friend’s family had not seen her, either.

Fear and panic quickly set in as the family realized that Debruhl was nowhere to be found.

Her sister describes Debruhl as “precious.” She loved children and singing in the church choir, and she could recite from the Bible. “She was so sweet and innocent,” her sister said.

Police searched the property, and Debruhl’s family, friends and neighbors joined forces to look for her.

“Soon, days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and months turned into years, but we never stopped looking,” Settlemyer said.

Debruhl’s father quit his job, devoting himself to the search. Her parents sold their house that fall to pay for a private investigator.

“Eva was the baby of our family, and we treated her like that,” Settlemyer said. “My parents were just heartbroken.”

It was the family’s second tragedy. Four years earlier, a drunken driver killed Debruhl’s 11-year-old brother in front of the house as he and a friend walked to a church playground to play basketball.

To this day, police have had few clues to follow in Debruhl’s disappearance.

There were no signs of forced entry, and police told the family that whoever may have taken Debruhl knew their home and their schedule.

Debruhl’s grandmother said she recalled seeing a blue or green truck with a white top drive up to the property on the day the teen vanished.

A man got out and knocked on the door to Debruhl’s house. She said she didn’t get a good look at him because he had his back to her, according to the police report.

The vehicle drove off and returned about 10 minutes later, and the grandmother could not see who was in it. She didn’t pay a lot of attention because Debruhl’s father repaired autos, and strangers would often visit to have work done.

The truck and the man were never located.

Another potential clue was a Coke bottle Debruhl’s father found in the yard, where the truck had pulled over.

The bottle was made in Georgia, indicating that whoever dropped it may have been from out of state. A Coca-Cola bottling plant in Rock Hill served South and North Carolina, Settlemyer said.

Yet the bottle was not dusted for fingerprints.

Over the years, Debruhl’s family was approached by people who demanded money for information on the teen’s whereabouts. In a sting operation, Debruhl’s mother met one man who wanted $15,000. Police arrested him. He was convicted of extortion, Settlemyer said.

More than once, Debruhl’s parents were called to the medical examiner’s office in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to view unidentified remains, but they weren’t Debruhl’s.

At one point in the investigation, it was believed that Henry Lee Lucas, a drifter who claimed to have killed hundreds of people in dozens of states, may have been in the area about the time Debruhl disappeared.

A sheriff’s representative and Debruhl’s father went to Texas in the 1980s when Lucas was arrested there. Lucas said he could not recall whether he killed anyone in the area or even whether he had been there, Settlemyer said.

Years ago, one sheriff’s investigator was so involved in the case that he worked it on his days off, searching, digging and looking for hard-to-find clues.

The current lead investigator, Capt. Jerry Hoffman of the York County Sheriff’s Office, has an Eva Debruhl case file the size of a banker’s box.

Following up on a tip, police recently dug up a well and the property once owned by Debruhl’s family. In other searches, cadaver dogs found nothing. A forensic psychologist was brought in to use hypnotism on one person who was interviewed.

“This one is a little more frustrating,” Hoffman said.

Settlemyer says she knows that someone out there knows exactly what happened to Debruhl, who was 5’1” and 105 pounds when she vanished. She was blonde, had blue eyes and wore glasses. She was last seen in blue shorts and yellow blouse.

Settlemyer believes that her sister is dead but still speaks of hope when asked about the case.

“All we want and all we have ever wanted is closure. We have already forgiven that person,” she said. “We know that person will have another judge that will give them the punishment they need.”

Kimberly Janis Boyd

On April 3, 1987 Sarah Boyd and her friend, Linda McCord, attended a Gospel concert in Walterboro, SC along with Sarah’s 2 year old, Kimberly Janis Boyd. Afterwards, heading home to Orangeburg, SC, driving through Dorchester County, they were seen by witnesses driving slowly with another car behind them. The witnesses were unable to describe the occupants of the car following them along Route 15.

Two days later their car was found by Sarah Boyd’s husband abandoned near an intersection in rural Dorchester County, but the two friends and Kimberly were gone. They have not been seen nor heard from since.

Kimberly was just a toddler, and Sarah Boyd and Linda McCord were both 32 years old in 1987 when they vanished. According to reports at the time foul play wasn’t suspected and therefore the car was not processed as a crime scene.

In 2009, a member of the online missing persons site, Help Find The Missing, felt there may be a connection with a child’s unidentified remains found in Georgia in 1988. This child, found in Ware County, Georgia wrapped in a blanket, but encased in concrete inside a suitcase, bore a resemblance to Kimberly. A tip was sent in to investigators who replied that they were seriously looking into a possible match considering the circumstances and locations of those surrounding the disappearance of Kimberly.

According to several sources online, there is no picture or vital information available for either Sarah Boyd or Linda McCord, and this writer was unable to uncover any information about the two women other than their ages at the time they vanished.

I was born before 1982. Maybe I was born in the 70’s. The 1970’s was known for great music, weird clothes, odd dances, the end of a war, and an interesting political time. I probably grew up in the late 70’s and into the 80’s. Now the 1980’s that was a completely different time from the 1970’s, it was time of change. The 1980’s the hair, clothes, and music was just the start of the new world to come. New directions emerged in 1980’s from television and politics to drugs and gangs. 1980’s became a time when awareness started to sink in. We learned that the world was larger than our own town, county, even State. We learned about what was going on all over the nation and the world. We learned of disease, serial killers, gang violence, and dirty politics. We watched great men crumple before us on television. Life was now presented to us on more than one channel. Cable was born. What we had little knowledge of became greater knowledge as it was fed to us by spoonful. Well that was the era I grew up in. My life developed during these decades.

By 2000, life changed again. This time it was internet that was feeding us buckets filled with information instantaneously without sensors. The truth, the lies, the deceit, the reality all presented before us on a computer, now leaving it up to us what we watch and listen to, what we believe. Only one thing that happened in 2000 that prevented me from learning about this new world unfolding on the internet. I was killed.

It’s estimated that sometime around July 2000 I was killed and left off the side of the road. On August 3, 2000, my lifeless body was discovered near a rest stop off the 1-20 in Darlington County, South Carolina. I had no identification. My fingerprints were not in the system. My DNA has not matched anyone known missing so far. It’s been ten years and they still don’t know who I am.

I’m one of the lucky ones. I’ve had two forensic artists lend their talent to help try and identify me. Kindly that restored some value granting me back part of my identity, in hopes to learn my name. You can now see what the artists believe I might have looked like. It’s wonderful. Remember, it’s only their work and I might have differed some, but it’s a great start to helping me find my family.

More about me, they think I was anywhere from 18 to 35 years old. I guess that means I could have lived in the 60’s too! From what the authorities could determine I’m white female with medium brown hair who probably stood 5’3 and might have weighed 120 lbs. I have some distinctive features that might you help you figure out who I am. I had a hooked nose, a prominent jaw line, extensive dental work, and an overbite.

Is it possible I sound like someone you know? If yes, please call the authorities and tell them who I am. If not, please help me find that person who does know me. LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Call it mother's instinct, or maybe that suspicious nature as a Richland County sheriff's deputy, but the Lexington County Sheriff's Department called in members of the Gutierrez family Monday. We can't give you the details of what they talked about, because it could hamper the investigation.

This is happening on Jessie's birthday.

One of the people questioned was the little girl who was sleeping right beside Jessie the night she disappeared. Now, for the first time, Jessie's sister Rebecca is sharing her story.

"No one should have to live through this nightmare we have lived through since '86," Rebecca says.

If the lead suspect in the disappearance of her sister Jessie goes to trial, she could be the key witness. That night, June 7, 1986, six-year-old Rebecca was sleeping in the same bed with her little sister, a scene that haunts her 21 years later. "That man standing over our bed and him bending over to pick Jessie up. I see his face every night before I go to bed."

It's a face she described from the beginning, the man with the magic hat.

Authorities have suspected a West Columbia man from day one, but have not charged him. Authorities say his fingerprint was found at the scene. He's a man who raped a women days after Jessie disappeared.

He's now a convicted sex offender who did time, who authorities say told a cell mate that he killed a little girl in Lexington County, that he wore a cowboy hat as he took her.

"I relive it every night since '86, every night I lay my head down and go to sleep," says Rebecca. She says she was paralyzed by fear that night. She couldn't scream, couldn't move.

Rebecca says Jessie never woke up as the man walked out of the room, her sister slumped over his shoulder.

Instead of telling her mom right then, Rebecca pulled a blanket over her head. To this day, she hasn't stopped blaming herself and reliving the night. "I see it like I'm there all over again, except this time I jump on his back. I scream, get on his back."

Debbie Gutierrez-Garnsey says, "I don't blame my daughter today. I love all of my children. I blame the person that took Jessie, not my daughter."

Twenty-eight now and a mother of two, Rebecca named her daughter after the sister she didn't have time to get to know. "She was only four. What hurts the most, I couldn't tell you what her favorite music is - just the little things, her favorite food, favorite cookie, her seeing my daughter and son, being an aunt."

While both feel the system has let them down in the past, they say this time they have new hope. This time will be different.

Debbie says her faith tells her so. "I know I was led by God. God's not going to let this go - heard today, forgotten tomorrow. We're going to get results."

Rebecca says, "We want them to follow through with what they should have been doing back in 1986. We want justice, closure. This is something we'll have to live with all of our life, but it would be a little easier knowing the person who did this goes to jail and pays for what he's done to my sister, our family."

So where does the Lexington County Sheriff's Department stand? Will there be an arrest?

A spokesman reiterated Monday afternoon that until they take definitive action they won't talk about the case.

Details of Disappearance

Paul's parents, James Baker and Lynda Solorzano, separated in the mid-1980s. James's affair with Susan, who was employed as their children's babysitter, caused the breakup of the marriage. Solorzano said that she moved out of their home with Paul and his sister Nina shortly thereafter. She claimed that James never paid child support afterwards. Solorzano had limited financial means after their separation and applied for public assistance. She was pregnant with her new boyfriend's child by the time her divorce from James was finalized. Solorzano said that the judge sided with James and agreed that she did not have the means to support Paul and Nina. James was awarded full custody of both children and married Susan afterwards.

The Bakers purchased a home in Beaufort, South Carolina by 1987. Susan told authorities that she put Paul down for a nap inside their residence on March 5 of that year. Susan claimed Paul had vanished by the time she returned to check on him. He has never been seen again. An extensive search of the Bakers' property produced little evidence as to Paul's whereabouts.

State authorities removed Nina from the family's home after Paul's disappearance. Investigators learned that she suffered broken bones and had sores covering her body. Susan was convicting of abusing the child and sentenced to ten years in prison for assault and battery. Her sentence was suspended due to time served. Solorzano was involved in a legal battle in an attempt to win custody of her daughter. Nina was eventually placed in her maternal grandmother's care while Solorzano was given the opportunity to improve her life.

Susan and James were extradited back to South Carolina from their Florida residence in 2000 in connection with Paul's disappearance. James had been discharged from military service in 1999 when South Carolina authorities reopened Paul's case. Foul play is suspected in Paul's disappearance. His whereabouts remain unknown.

For those of us who have taken it upon our hearts to communicate and work with family members of missing persons, there are always certain cases that one draws close to.

Help Find The Missing has always been a great source for me, and among the case information on missing persons can be found a lot of caring members. Low on drama and high on details and friendship has always been a requisite for me and they fit the bill!

One of the members there holds Samantha Smith, her case, and her family close to her heart. Living near the area from where Samantha vanished, she is able to get a first hand look at the facts and also speak to those who who were close to Samantha.

Many times waking hours are spent going over the clues, re-enacting the "what ifs" in your head, digging for anything new that might shed light on what could have happened to that person that seemingly vanished into thin air. It's often a breath of fresh air to see that someone can make that missing person real to us, and regardless of media exposure (or lack thereof) and speculation, each missing person deserves to be more than a face on a poster.

She made Samantha real to us just by the outpouring of her own feelings about her and her case. This is the one she wants desperately to be solved. Thanks for being the light in the darkness for Samantha!

Details of Disappearance Smith was last seen in Clinton, South Carolina on November 5, 2006. At the time, she was living with her boyfriend in a house in the 100 block of Leila Street. Her boyfriend stated they got into an argument about religion and Smith walked into a wooded area behind her home and never returned. Smith has never been heard from again. She left all her personal belongings behind, except her purse. There is no evidence of foul play in Smith's case, and her boyfriend has been ruled out as a suspect in her disappearance, but it is unclear what happened to her. Smith is described as an intelligent young woman. She enjoyed photography, hiking and horseback riding at the time of her disappearance. She was a student at Piedmont Tech and made good grades; she wanted to transfer to Lander University and become an art teacher. She has dropped out of sight before, but never for this long, and her family believes she may have come to harm. Her case remains unsolved.

Viridiana Maldonado

Viridiana Maldonado was a young mother. She had her first child at age 15 or 16. She married and had another child four years later. Her husband, Jorge, was in the Army stationed at Ft. Lewis near Tacoma, WA.

According to news accounts they had trouble in their marriage which led "Viri" to take out an Order of Protection against Jorge. Apparently she had had enough and moved back to her family in North Charleston, SC with her 2 children, leaving Jorge in WA.

She lived with her mother and sister in an apartment on Dunbar Ave., along with her children. She held a postition with a local restaurant, La Nortena, and her boss was a friend of the family. From all accounts she was making a go of it with the support of her family.

On the evening of Oct. 11, 2007 she came home, changed her clothes and said she was going out with her sister in law, Vicky Roberts, for the evening. Nothing unusual was said to her family, nothing unusual about her demeanor that night. Just a night out with friends.

Her family reports that approximately 2am they received text messages from her cell phone. This was odd, because Viridiana did not usually text message them. One said she was in downtown Charleston, drinking with a man named Miguel. The next message said she was on her way home to Mexico. That was the last activity on her cell phone....ever.

Six days later her bank account, with a balance of about $1000, was closed by telephone and a cashiers check was sent to Tacoma, WA. It has not been reported who made that phone call, who closed that account, and who received the money.

There are a slew of strange circumstances surrounding this disappearance.

Vicky Roberts, her sister in law, says she was not with her and had not seen her for 2 weeks prior to Oct. 11.

Viridiana's estranged husband, Jorge, left the Army, moved back to North Charleston and claimed his child. He is reported to have been cooperative with police in the investigation.

Who is Miguel? Her family states they never heard Viri speak about any man named Miguel. Did she just meet him somewhere that night, or did she know him beforehand?

What is happening in this case now? Are these questions being answered for her mother and family? Apparently, they don't think enough is being put into the investigation and it looks like a lot of clues are getting cold as time goes by.

We have 2 small children who don't know what happened to their Mommy, a young, beautiful woman who was loved and cared for by her family in her times of trouble. Viridiana, just as so many others, is being forgotten. The longer we let these questions go unanswered, the colder the trail gets, and it happens all too often.

As time ticks forward, Donna Parent wakes up November 16th knowing it is her daughter's birthday. It won't be a day of usual parties and celebrations for this event. Brandy Hanna has been missing without a trace.

Brandy had her share of life's ups and downs, but by all indications she was turning a bend in her life, living on her own, although struggling to make ends meet. The day she was reported missing it is stated everything in her apartment looked like she had just stepped out of the room. All her belongings, money, cell phone, even the glass of tea she was drinking was left as if she would be back in a second. It has been three long years and she has not come back to finish that glass of tea.

Each year's events are marked with vigils, candles, prayers, balloon releases, all in order to keep the awareness of Brandy Hanna in the public eye. Donna Parent works tirelessly with organizations to accomplish that goal. It is the united effort of all family members of missing persons that will keep these cases fresh.

Crystal Soles leaves behind a small son who is still wondering where his mother might be.

Wilmington, NC – Four years Crystal Soles has remained missing and it has taken a toll on her family; “I have suffered the lost my father, husband and son in the time my daughter has been missing, I don’t know how much more I can take”, said the Gail Soles the mother of missing, Crystal Soles. Gail’s brother, Keith voices his frustration, “we cannot go back and change what has happened to my niece, however people in this community knew her and knows what happened, it breaks my heart as they just go about their lives; all we ask is to get Crystal back and for final answers”.

“None of us are getting any younger and Crystal has a child who too deserves to know his mother did not walk out on him, he should not have to live his life wondering where his mother is”, he added.

On January 24, 2005 Crystal called home and spoke with her father in the morning hours, needing a ride; her father was in bad health at the time and could not go to pick her up; Crystal said in a happy voice “that’s okay Dad, I will walk”. What happened after that call on that bitter cold January morning has left investigators puzzled. Crystal vanished in her path home and soon rumors or theories circulated like a wild fire, none of which has located her, to bring her home to her then, five year old son and family.

In the following years the Soles family has not sat idle, they contacted the CUE Center for Missing Persons who have conducted numerous search efforts, the family hosted awareness events, walking door to door, to no avail. “I have to ask what will it take? What will make someone tell me where my daughter is? I have done all I know and have even begged total strangers for help”, said Gail Soles. Through all this, the Soles family continues to hold out hope for answers.

Now the Crystal’s family has launched a website in an effort to have a place that tipsters can provide information and also for her memory to stay alive. The friends of missing youth Branson Perry form Skidmore, Missouri and that volunteer for the CUE Center offered to aid in the design and the launching of the website. Searchers find skeletal remains in Andrews

ANDREWS, SC --

Andrews Police Chief Jennifer Flowers says a dive team recovered skeletal remains Wednesday afternoon, thought to possibly be those of a missing Andrews woman.

Crystal Soles, 28, has been missing since Jan. 24, 2005. Her mother told News13 at the time of her disappearance that Soles called her father from the Shaw’s Corner Store in Andrews saying she was on her way home. She never made it home that night.

A 19 year old daughter should not have to reflect on the past about her mother and how dear she was to her, and a 14 year old son should not have to worry about not being able to remember his mother's voice. Children should not have to wonder where their mother is and why she can't be found, but this is exactly how the last five years have been for the two children of Lisa Shuttleworth who has been missing since September4, 2003 from Beech Island, SC.

Lisa was supposed to pick up her son, Ryan, at the bus stop after school that afternoon, but in her stead an older family friend was there to meet him. Returning Ryan to his home, they found it locked and no sign of Lisa, although her car, along with a car she had borrowed, were still in her driveway. After Lisa's parents were called they all entered the house and found no signs of struggle, and the only thing missing was her purse. It looked as if Lisa planned to return shortly, even a pot of tea was on the stove, her jewelry on the kitchen counter.

Lisa was a single mother, an excellent mother according to family sources, her two children knew they were loved, well taken care of, and that she would never leave them of her own free will. So what happened to Lisa?

Lisa was divorced from the father of her children and it's said that he could be violent at times. Lisa also had a boyfriend at the time who sources say had a bad argument with her the night before she vanished. Both men had trucks that were not available to be searched at the time. One of the trucks was located recently and sprayed with luminol to detect the presence of blood. There was blood reportedly in the truck, but was determined to be "male blood".

As in most cases, suspicions and rumors abound and questions go unanswered while there is an open investigation. Law enforcement officials in Aiken County, SC claim that this is a "very open investigation". As of this writing, there have been no ground searches conducted and the pond behind Lisa's home has not been drained.

Five years have gone by and evidence may now be cold, but that doesn't stop Lisa's children, family members and close friends from giving up hope that one day their questions will be answered and justice will be served.

Grandparents shouldn't have to step in to raise their grandchildren, but Lisa's parents did just that. They have taken Krystina and Ryan into their home and loved them and provided for them for the last five years.

"She's my mom, when my mom was gone, she was here. She hasn't left my side."

Krystina is showing all the signs of being a beautiful copy of her mother, with a lot of her same features. She has plans to attend college and work in the area of criminal investigations to help others investigate missing persons cases as well as her mother's case.

Family and friends have passed out fliers and even have gone so far as to consult a psychic in order to help find Lisa Shuttleworth. The Missing From South Carolina

The purpose of this blog is to familiarize myself and my readers with the missing persons and unidentifieds from my home state of South Carolina.

I hope to do a blog post on each of those on the list, as time allows, just to do t a little something for the families of those missing. Also, I will share the stories through social media networks so that others may know who they are. Who knows, perhaps some media outlet will pick up a story and carry it even further.

I call out and challenge anyone else out there who would like to participate to do something similar for those in your home state. I think if we each "adopt" those in our own states we can reach out and do a little more.

I'm not a professional advocate, nor do I have a missing loved one, but my heart is torn by the thought that there are many families who have a loved one missing that do not have internet, do not have the skills to plan and execute an awareness campaign, and do not deserve to be less than those who do.

There are many good organizations and networking sites available, each who play their own role within the world of the missing. They also need to be recognized for the painstakingly hard work they do on a daily basis.
